This evening, as I was lying on my couch watching China’s CCTV English news.  What struck me was that it was using a “flip-panel” news announcement, a suggestion that I made several years ago regarding ChannelNewsAsia (CNA) tickertape news that stream text across the bottom screen on latest updates.  I do find the streaming tickertape text rather outmoded as compared to CCTV flip-panel news announcement.

Ticker tape was the earliest digital electronic communications medium, transmitting stock price information over telegraph lines, in use between around 1870 through 1970. It consisted of a paper strip which ran through a machine called a stock ticker, which printed abbreviated company names as alphabetic symbols followed by numeric stock transaction price and volume information.

Paper ticker tape started to become obsolete in the 1960s, as television and computers were increasingly used to transmit financial information. The concept of the stock ticker lives on, however, in the scrolling electronic tickers seen on brokerage walls and on financial television networks.    (Wikipedia)

Why Tickertape is outmoded

1)    It distracts and defocus a viewer from the main  news as it takes time for the “crawling” news to stream across the screen.  Thus many precious seconds are lost waiting for the entire news to stream across. A flip-panel will allow a viewer to see the entire news at a single glance whilst maintaining focus on the main news broadcast.

2)   In a tickertape text, if you miss the starting of the stream, but caught a glimpse of the last few words that appeal to you, then you will have to wait for the stream to finish a full cycle and this could be minutes, and very often when it reappear, we will lose the first few texts again.  If happens so very often and I get distracted from the primary news broadcast.

3)  Streaming text is more suited for stock indices and prices where the viewer’s primarily focus is in monitoring those rapidly changing stock indicators.  To them the ongoing news becomes a background event and their focus priority are different from the rest of the other looking out for breaking world or regional news events that could be better presented in flip-panel text banner style.

Why Flip-panel Text is Better

3)    Flip-panel is suited for speed-reading where the eye scan blocks of text in split seconds.  Not only would it make for faster reading but ultimately for better assimilation of information.   Flip text on average stay longer on screen for viewers to have enough time to glance downwards, digest the information and get back to the main broadcast news.

4)   The are some reasons why the mainstream news in the some major countries uses streaming text.  One is to distract discerned viewers from focusing on important news like war or act of violence that were being broadcast, especially by independent reporters.  Thus the streaming text is one way of distracting the viewers.

So to continue to improve on our TV news reports and updates of breaking news text, we could emulate CCTV English news using the flip-panel screen.  Being the premier broadcast news in this region, we should continue to look for ways to present breaking news in a more easily assimilating manner that could be viewed in a single glance.  Some may argue that the text could become smaller if you do that but of course, it could go into a second line in the next panel flip.  Block reading is still the way to go.

Other news that uses the flip text includes Bloomberg news and ESPN sports.  This shows they value the importance of bring better information to the public.  Only the share indexes are streaming as in the old days.

Are we to continue living in the past?

Currently it seemed that bankrupted Iceland is being protected by US and Nato airspace for whatever reasons. The following developments looks pretty scary:

1)  U.S. Air Force, NATO Fly to Protect Iceland’s Air Sovereignty  (24 May 20120)

Airmen from Nevada to Germany are currently deployed here to conduct Icelandic air policing missions until June 7.

The 493rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, which is made up of U.S. Air Force and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization personnel, is a specialized team prepared to ensure Iceland’s air sovereignty.  (link)

2)  News: Panel sets June 7 date for JPMorgan CEO to testify

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon is being asked to appear before a Senate panel on June 7 to answer questions about the bank’s $2 billion-plus trading loss.

3) Icelandic Economists Make Pitch For Adoption Of Canadian Dollar (Wall Street Journal – 15 May

Hopefully the Iceland volcanoes would be exploited as a tool for diversion to recover ill-gotten funds.

The present promotion of HPV vaccination into Southeast Asia should be viewed with much caution given the fact the quite a number of young females had succumbed to the vaccination side-effect.  Of course, alot of moneys are involved in the vaccination.  In US alone, some 8 millions girls and women had been vaccinated (about S$400 per jab) and this comes up to a staggering S$3.2 billion (more than the current JPmorgans US$2 billion loses).  Vaccination appear to be quick way of making money since there are so many variants of viruses out there!

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, recently issued an update on adverse reaction reports relating to Gardasil. The documents obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) detail 26 new deaths reported following HPV vaccination between September 1, 2010 and September 15, 2011. That’s 26 deaths of young, previously healthy, girls in just one year.

I was just watching Ch5 news and during the commercial break interval this nice lady came out to urge ladies to undergo HPV vaccination against cervical cancer. The intention is sincere and honest.  I quickly checked with my wife and she said that she have gone for the vaccination but was cautiously aware of the danger of taking too much vaccination.  I have also read about it sometime back too.

A simple check in the internet will tell you about the controversy over HPV vaccination and related deaths. Do visit youtube to hear the horrendous stories told by victims.  You need to make informed decision before taking any vaccinations that has much controversies surrounding it.

Dr Merco warned about the danger in this followup writeup in 2011:

If You Think You Know Everything About Vaccines… Think Again!  (link)

You have to look at the video below:

THE GREATER GOOD looks behind the fear, hype and politics that have polarized the vaccine debate in America today.

The film re-frames the emotionally charged issue and offers, for the first time, the opportunity for a rational and scientific discussion on how to create a safer and more effective vaccine program.”

This film recently received the 2nd annual “Koroni Award for a documentary feature addressing an issue of importance to public health” at the Sidewalk Film Festival.

It also received the Cinematic Vision Award at the 2011 Amsterdam Film Festival.

    Of interest would be:

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, recently issued an update on adverse reaction reports relating to Gardasil. So it is always good to read widely and be more discerning.

However, new viruses are always surfacing here with influx of foreigners and better travel mobility.  So it is hard to decide whether to risk cervical cancer or vaccine “side” effect.  Hopefully our medical students can be better trained in research and abreast of latest developments and controversies rather than being exam smart.

Take Care and I love you babes.

Another thing:   For those who cannot decide whether to go for HPV or “so called” risked cervical cancer (with increasing immigrants here), the alternative appear to go for more pap smear test.  All these will of course cost money.  However, I do wonder if pap smear test can be a cause for the transmission of the HPV viruses if the hygiene and examining procedure is not properly adhere to. Like not changing gloves etc.  I am only speculating for this.

Now you know why many well-read people in the internet do not consume the sugar-free products that include the artificial sweetener, Aspartame.

It is found in the Diet Colas of many well known brand.  Many pregnant mothers or mother-to-be are drinking this food with aspartame.  Of course the kid looks healthy during birth.  Worst still as they grow up, to prevent obesity, the poor child would be strongly encourage to take sugar free sweets and products and this really kills their brain development.

Retired food scientist and Professor Emeritus of Food Science and Nutrition at Arizona State University (ASU) Dr. Woodrow C. Monte

In his study entitled Methanol: A chemical Trojan Horse as the root of the Inscrutable U, Dr. Monte evaluates the role that methanol plays in human health. Since methanol is a relatively new addition to the human diet, thanks to processing methods and chemical syntheses that did not exist prior to 1800s, it is vitally important to determine how this chemical substance affects the human body.

What Dr. Monte discovered is that methanol is converted by the body into formaldehyde, a highly toxic substance known to cause cancer in humans. He also uncovered the fact that methanol metabolizes in organs of the body other than just the liver which, based on all available evidence, is directly responsible for causing what Dr. Monte has termed “diseases of civilization” (DOC)

Source: 24medica.com    (Written by Robert Smith,   Wednesday, 18 April 2012)

The artificial sweetener Aspartame is found in so many food product because the US FDA legalized it and many “foolish” countries follow suit.   Even the body builders’ whey protein sold here in Singapore is laden with the artificial sweetener, only in US are they well read people who can acquire the non-Aspartame version.   It is also found in vegetarian food here although I do not know how much.

Of course, taking less sugar food appear to help you to lose weight but in the longer term the weight loss is due to the energy lost from the body fighting the toxin formaldehyde (derived from methanol ) inside the body.

Formaldehyde is also found in shampoo but NOT REPORTED in the ingredient once their amount fall within a certain “approved” level. So if you soap yourself in a shampoo bath or lather your hair to long in the many toxic chemicals now found in almost all shampoo, good luck to you.  “Hair (Here) Today, Gone Tomorrow”

“Formaldehyde is a very reactive substance, but dissolved in water it becomes a monster (formalin) with the propensity to attach to any protein molecule that it touches. Formaldehyde in the air causes cancers in human nasal passages, because it is so reactive, it attaches to the first moist protein with which it makes contact. ” (link)

Aspartame Now Changed Its Name!!!!

Aspartame (APM; /ˈæspərtm/ or /əˈspɑrtm/) is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages. In the European Union, it is codified as E951. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first sold under the brand name NutraSweet; since 2009 it also has been sold under the brand name AminoSweet. It was first synthesized in 1965 and the patent expired in 1992.   (Wikipedia)

Aspartame has been renamed and is now being marketed as a natural sweetener

I applaud the recent efforts by the Ministry of Manpower for the legislated rest day for maids to be give a day off every week from 2013.   For those who need maids during the “off days” period could perhaps resort to part-time agencies to fill the gap and use that money otherwise required to pay the existing maid to pay for the part-time domestic helper.  Of course it is easier said than done.  Nonetheless, I agree that the maids needed the time off for their mental well being.

Today (3 Apr 2012) published another report “MOM to enhance safety training for foreign maids” that is also good but seemed that it did not stop the perennial issue of maids falling off from high-rise building over the years.  Personally, I think the pamphlets and lessons only serve to remind the maids and employers of safety concerns.

It would be better if the maids’ safety could be viewed from the angle of a construction worker.  Meaning, besides the usual safety lessons, slogans, signboards and lessons that have became quite routine, I would like to equate maids as construction workers working at highrise buildings when harness becomes a mandatory equipment.

Whether they use it or not is not the issue but at least there is a compulsory provision for them to use it if they want to.  That is the point.

Hope the relevant authorities can see the point and please continue with your good effort so far.

Why the large statistics of maids who fells from highrise buildings?

1.  Basically not many Singaporeans wash their windows especially on the outside pane.  I wonder why the maids are tasked to do such dangerous jobs when the owner themselves refrain from such activities.   Some only provide shaky stools for their maids to stand or worst still to tiptoe to reach the top of the window panes and this is can be very dangerous indeed.

2.  Unfamiliarity is also another factor.  The foreign maids lived in “landed” property back home and as such their feet are not used to the slippery floor here. The smooth homogenous kitchen floor tiles (as strongly recommended by certain agencies for whatever reasons during the earlier years) still persist and are very slippery indeed.   Even Singaporeans tread very carefully after a mop not to mention those drippings wet clothes before bring out the bamboo poles.

3.  Thirdly, some maids have so much multitaskings that even I find it mind-boggling.  So haste becomes a danger.

Who Can Provide The Safety Harness

1.   The maid agencies who can at least provide to a set to those who work in highrise buildings.  Maybe a refundable loan would be good.

2.  Outreach or charity organizations who can approach either those families on outing with theirs maids or just the around maids hangout areas like Lucky Plaza etc.

3.  Maybe the Ministry of Manpower too.  But I doubt so.

Basically we should be mindful of the development and employment of the potentially harm that full-body airport scanners can have on our DNA (genes) that could not only be fatal to your health but also your womb and especially if you are pregnant

1.   On 14 Nov 2011 (4 months ago), The European Union  prohibited the use of X-ray body scanners in European airports, parting ways with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, which has deployed hundreds of the scanners as a way to screen millions of airline passengers for explosives hidden under clothing.

The European Commission, which enforces common policies of the EU’s 27 member countries, adopted the rule “in order not to risk jeopardizing citizens’ health and safety.”

As a ProPublica/PBS NewsHour investigation detailed earlier this month, X-ray body scanners use ionizing radiation, a form of energy that has been shown to damage DNA and cause cancer. Although the amount of radiation is extremely low, equivalent to the radiation a person would receive in a few minutes of flying, several research studies have concluded that a small number of cancer cases would result from scanning hundreds of millions of passengers a year.  (link)

2.    The Greatest Joke in 2011

TSA Puts Off Safety Study of X-ray Body Scanners

by Michael Grabell ProPublica, Nov. 16, 2011, 1:37 p.m

At a Senate hearing after the story ran, TSA Administrator John Pistole agreed to a request by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, to conduct a new independent study of the health effects of the X-ray scanners, also known as backscatters.

But at a Senate hearing of a different committee last week, Pistole said he had since received a draft report on the machines by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, or IG, that might render the independent study unnecessary.

“My strong belief is those types of machines are still completely safe,” Pistole said. “If the determination is that this IG study is not sufficient, then I will look at still yet another additional study.”

Comments: John Pistole graduated from Law studies and would probably be clueless when it comes to health. God Bless America! What is security without HEALTH???? …. when millions could be dying from cancer not forgetting their subsequent mutant offsprings.  No wonder there are so many sickos mentally and physically there.

Three things in the medical world aroused my interests this week.

Successful Face Transplant

1.  I read about the successful face transplant of Richard Norris who was disfigured some 15 years ago after being shot in the face.  After 15 years of wearing a mask and living as a recluse, a 37-year-old Virginia man disfigured in a gun accident got a new face, nose, teeth and jaw in what University of Maryland physicians say is the most extensive face transplant ever performed.   The University of Maryland’s research on transplants was funded by a grant from the Office of Naval Research, and doctors said they hope to begin operating soon on military patients.  (link)

Importantly, what amazed me was that he regain his sense of smell and could feel his own face.  However, I feel the urgency for this news was also linked to the news no. 2 below on the new innovations on rapid nerves repairs.  It could have a major impact for this successful facial transplant.

Rapid nerve repair helps lame rats walk within days

2.      The is perhaps the best medical article I have read so far.  In fact, it was this experiment that seemed to offer much hope for those paralyzed through damaged nerve at the limbs.  I was flipping through the The New Scientist (Feb 2012issue) at the library and came across the simple solution of reattaching the nerves by simply preventing the natural healing process (in a calcium-free solution) after the new nerves are severe to keep the detached ends from closing and providing a medical glue to glue them together and only then to infuse with a calcium rich solution to commence natural healing and close up the circuit pathway.  It is that simple.  You see read the article and watch the video.  (New Scientist, 3 Feb 2012).  However, I am not sure if it can really help those stroke victims whose brain neural activity had been damaged extensively but still a very good findings for severed or damaged nerves at the limb area.  Maybe in the near future, the paramedics could be dispensing a calcium free solution or injections to prevent nerve damage during those precious minutes.

Italian doctor may have found surprisingly simple cure for Multiple Sclerosis

3.     Although this simple cure reported in Gizmag (Feb 2009) seemed rather dated, but it could offer much hopes for many afflicted with this nervous and muscle disease.  Basically this Italian doctor, Dr. Zamboni took a novel approach and found that most of the victims could not remove the excess iron in their brain region.  More than 90% of people with MS have some sort of malformation or blockage in the veins that drain blood from the brain.  He named the problem Chronic Cerebro-Spinal Venous Insufficiency, or CCSVI.   Strange that wikipedia omitted the excess iron in their writeup on MS.

So, perhaps those ladies taking too much iron supplements to compensate their monthly losses could be at risk for MS.  Those into the menopausal age may want to look into it too.   The distance runners who take alot of iron tablets should be mindful too.

Of course there is always the earth geomagnetic flux strongly influenced by the sun that could affect the movement of iron within our bodies and perhaps this also a factor to consider.  Not only for MS but also for breast cancer.  We should keep abreast of such developments.
