Just read this morning in the internet news from Reuters and which is probably a conclusion to the anthrax saga following its much hyped scare after Sept 11 that cast much aspersions on many countries, individuals and groups resulting in much animosity and disquietness. It would be good to read this in tandem with an earlier report by a bioterrorism expert, Milton Leitenberg, also from Maryland, who in Dec 2005, wrote “Assessing The Biological Weapons and Bioterrorism Threat” which I felt was very logical and rational in the face of our fixations in the shock-and-awe episodes happening around the world. If security becomes an uncontrollable spirallng businesses that it would not be able to fuel itself in the long run as “terrorist” runs out and by then who should we then classified as “terrorist” to justify the exhorbitant amount spent on security. Sensibility should prevails. A classic example would the opportunistic attempt by Lloyds Insurance to raise its premiums for ships passing through the Malacca Straits when pirates were deemed a terrorists sometime back. Good that the regional governments took steps to address this complex issue.
Given the increasingly stagflations around the world, it would be wise to channel our increasingly dwindling resources to build a better world instead of spreading animosity (a part from Black Eye Pea). That are plenty of businesses around us that are humane and life-enriching.
In retrospect we should learn from how US took steps to improve its image via this episode.
Cheers
